       Shawl Weaving Artisan - Winding and Warping

       Knots used in handloom weaving

       Objectives : At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
       •  tie important knots used in handloom weaving for joining yarns, repairing breaks, or setting the loom.


         Requirements

          Tools/Equipment’s/Instruments                     Materials
          •  Yarn samples scissor             - 1 No.       •  Yarn                                                         - as reqd.


       PROCEDURE

       TASK 1: Square knot (Fig 1)
       1  Hold one end of the yarn in your left hand and the   Fig 1
          other end in your right hand.
       2  Pass the right-hand end over and under the left-
          hand end, this creates the first half knot.

       3  Pull both ends slightly to tighten.
       4  Take the left-hand end and cross it over and under
          the right-hand  end.  This creates the second  half-
          knot.
       5  Pull both ends firmly to tighten the knot.













       TASK 2: Over hand knot (Fig 1)

       1  Take the end of the yarn and form a small loop.

       2  Pass the free end of the yarn through the loop.
       3  Pull both ends firmly to tighten the knot.
